Use the following scenario to lead either a hands-on activity or a group discussion.  An airline catering employee was rushing so that he wouldn’t further delay an already late departure, and while attempting to force a stocked beverage cart off his small truck-mounted elevator, he smashed his hand in the aluminum locking rail. The injured man reflexively pulled his arm back, removing three fingers from his right hand. The fingers drop onto the deck at his feet. The man begins to bleed profusely and is writhing in severe pain on the elevator platform. He will begin to exhibit signs of shock as soon as he is approached, but his bleeding can be stopped with just pressure. Debriefing Points The students should consider the safety of the man’s location and at least inquire about the stability and potential danger of the platform. The students should make it a priority to stop the injured man’s bleeding with pressure. The students should activate the 911 system. The students should appropriately treat the injured man for shock. The students should be able to properly prepare the amputated fingers for delivery to EMS personnel.
